Admission Procedures and Requirements
For High School Students
1. The student will be introduced to Tech Center programs through a presentation done by the Tech Center guidance coordinator or by an individual meeting with the high school guidance counselor, case manager, or Tech Center guidance coordinator.
2. The student will have the opportunity to tour the Tech Center at any time or after viewing the Tech Center presentation. The student, student’s parents, guidance counselor, or case manager may arrange visits by contacting the Tech Center guidance coordinator, or the student may sign-up for a scheduled tour day. These tour days will be announced during the presentation done by the Tech Center guidance coordinator.
3. The Tech Center Program of Studies will be available at the Tech Center presentation, in the Tech Center guidance coordinator’s office, or in the home high school guidance office. All programs have admissions prerequisites that must be followed (these prerequisites are found in this Program of Studies.)
4. The application must be completed and signed by the student and the parent/guardian, and submitted to their counselor by February 15th. The counselor will sign and forward the application to the Tech Center. Applications submitted following that date would be accepted on a space available basis. Please note that the application requires the applicant to answer three questions relevant to his/her program choice. Applications received without responses to these questions will not be considered.
Admission to a program will be based on successful completion of the application procedures outlined in steps 1 - 5 above, academic performance history, attendance history, and discipline records. All students must complete the admissions procedure, including students admitted during the school year or as transfer students.
Students and guidance counselors will be notified as soon as possible regarding each student’s official admission to the Tech Center. Students who do not meet admission requirements will be sent a letter outlining available options. All accepted students will be placed on a probationary status for ten Tech Center school days, beginning with the first day of attendance. This phase will be used for curriculum-based assessment and to determine the appropriateness of placement. Students will automatically be granted full standing after the probationary period unless notified of continued probationary status or withdrawal.
Additional Admissions Information
In the first year of the program, priority placement will be given to juniors first, sophomores second, and seniors third. If a program fills, students will be placed on a waiting list and will be accepted on a space available basis prior to the start of the academic school year.
In two-period programs that offer a one-period option, one-period students will be accepted on a space available basis. Priority will be given to two-period students.
Students must be 16 years old upon admission or have an 11th grade standing. A student who is in the 10th grade may request admission into the Technical Center if they meet the admission criteria and it is determined that the student has the maturity to successfully participate in the Tech Center program.
Students with special needs, including students on Individualized Education Plans and students on 504 plans, are encouraged to apply to the Tech Center. For Enrollment Protocol and information about supports available at the Tech Center, please contact the Special Needs teacher at 527-6515.
Once a student on an IEP or 504 Plan has been accepted at the Tech Center, an IEP meeting must be held to determine the appropriateness of technical program placement. If placement is appropriate, accommodations necessary for success in that program will then be determined. The meeting must be held before the student begins classes at the Tech Center. Participants in the meeting will include the sending school special educator; Tech Center special needs teacher, parent/guardian, student, program instructor and others (as deemed necessary by the special educator and the Tech Center special needs teacher.) If a student, parent/guardian, or sending school prefers, this meeting may be held before a student applies to the Tech Center to discuss the range of programs and services the Tech Center can provide. To request such a meeting, please contact the special needs teacher at 527-6515.
