POLICIES FOR UNPAID INTERNSHIPS: In order for the student to receive the maximum educational benefit and to comply with the conditions for unpaid work experience outlined by the Fair Labor Standards Act, the follow­ing six (6) criteria MUST be met:

 

(1)       The on site experience, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is related to that which is taught at the Technical Center.

(2)       The experience is for the benefit of the student.

(3)       The student does not displace regular employees, but works under their close supervision.

(4)       The employer who provides the experience derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the students, and on occasion, business or industrial operations may actually be impeded.

(5)       The student is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the experience.

(6)       The employer and the student understand that the student is not entitled to wages for the time spent with that employer.

 

POLICIES FOR PAID EXPERIENCE: The following criteria MUST be met:

 

(1)       WAGES: Starting wage will be $                  per hour.  The student will receive wages comparable to those paid to other trainees performing the same type of work and will conform with state and federal minimum wage laws.

(2)       WORKERS= COMPENSATION INSURANCE: The Student will be covered by Workers' Compensation Insurance provided by the employer.  The employer will observe all laws and regulations, both state and federal, pertaining to the employment of minors.  Where a union or bargaining agency is involved, the employer will obtain union approval of the program.

 


THE EMPLOYER AGREES TO:  Avoid subjecting the student to unnecessary hazards.  Instruct the student in exper­iences described in the Training Plan.  Notify the co-op coordinator immediately if a problem arises.  Cooper­ate with the coordinator in arranging conferences or visits with the student.  Prepare progress reports as required by the school.  Have the student supervised at all times.

 

THE STUDENT AGREES TO: Report to work promptly as scheduled.  Provide own transportation.  Behave in a courteous, responsible and ethical manner.  Follow company policies regarding behavior, dress, health and safety. Maintain good attendance and performance in class and make reports required by the school.  Make no change in internship status without prior consultation with the co-op coordinator.

 

THE PARENT GUARDIAN AGREES TO:  Permit the student to participate in the Internship.  Provide appropriate health, accident and auto insurance.

THE CO-OP COORDINATOR AGREES TO: Monitor the student=s progress and implementation of the Training Plan.  Obtain appropriate progress reports.  Assist in developing solutions to problems which may arise from employer, student parent or school.  Provide related and technical instruction to the student.

This Agreement may be terminated at any time by the employer or the Technical Center after consultation with all interested parties.

The Northwest Technical Center and the employer ensure that students will be accepted and assigned to jobs and otherwise treated without regard to race, color, creed, disability, national origin, sex or sexual orientation.
